Safety Checklist for In-Person Learning

Safety Protocols for In-Person Learning
Posted on 03/05/2021

Akron Public Schools and Summit County Public Health work closely to determine safety guidelines. With your help, we can ensure guidance is followed so that schools may stay healthy and safe centers of learning.  Please review the following with your student. Visit for a video showing what to expect.

Before School:

  • Daily mask-wearing is required. Ensure your student has at least one properly fitting face mask from the time they leave home (such as on the bus, carpooling, etc.) until they return. Labeling the mask and/or packing a back-up mask is recommended.  Gaiters are not an acceptable mask due to being a single layer of fabric

  • Perform a self-check screener with your student. If your student is experiencing any signs of COVID, do not send them into school.

Signs of COVID include fever over 100.4°, cough or shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, nausea, or diarrhea.

  • If your student has had exposure to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID, do not send them to school.

  • Ensure your student has their personal supplies, such as paper, pencil, books, and charged Chromebook. Sharing or replacement supplies will be limited while at school.

  • Encourage your child daily by positively reinforcing good mask-wearing and hand-washing habits.

  • Talk to your child about how the school may look and feel a little different right now, such as the extra space between desks or signs in halls, and reassure them that the odd feeling is normal.

  • Ensure your school contact information is up-to-date.

During the School Day:

  • If dropping off your child, please remain in your car and follow any marked entrance guidance at your school.

  • Disposable water cups will be made available at each water fountain. Students may bring a water container that may be filled for personal use.

  • School meal service will be provided to your student. If you are packing a lunch for your child, ensure he or she knows not to share food.

  • Hand sanitizer stations are provided throughout the school and classrooms; however, you may provide your child with personal hand sanitizer bottles.

  • Outside visitors to the office or school will be limited. Always call your school in advance of an unscheduled visit.

  • Routinely check your email or other digital school communication for important updates.

  • Ask your school how your student’s IEP, OT, or PT services will continue.

  • Encourage frequent daily hand sanitizing and show your child how to maintain social distancing while on school grounds.

  • NOTE: Families will be contacted to pick up their child if he/she displays the following COVID symptoms: a temperature over 100 degrees Fahrenheit; persistent cough or shortness of breath; loss of taste or smell. Students will need to be picked up within 60 minutes of their family being contacted.

After School:

  • If picking up your child, please remain in your car and follow any marked exit guidance at your school.

  • Clean reusable face masks or discard any disposable masks.

  • Encourage students to wash their hands when returning home and wipe down any books or supplies.

  • Whenever possible, continue avoiding gatherings or crowds when outside of school.

  • As a family, develop a plan to protect any household members who are at increased risk.

  • Check any emails or other digital communications for updates and try to attend any virtual school meetings to stay informed.
